Texans-49ers
When Joe Nedney booted an overtime field goal through a drizzle as miserable as these teams' records, everybody won something in the San Francisco 49ers' season finale against the Houston Texans.
The 49ers salvaged some pride with consecutive victories - and the Texans definitely won by losing soon-to-be-fired coach Dom Capers' final game, wrapping up the No. 1 draft pick and the chance to dream about Reggie Bush.
Mike Adams lateraled his second interception to Ben Emanuel for a 35-yard return in OT, and Nedney set off an unlikely celebration with a 33-yard field goal with 3:52 left to end the 49ers' 20-17 victory Sunday.
The kick also provoked a giant sigh of relief in Houston, as the Texans (2-14) narrowly avoided ruining the only solace left in their awful season. After the game, a person close to the organization told The Associated Press that Capers will be fired Monday to start an offseason of big changes - probably peaking with a red-white-and-blue jersey for Bush.
If Houston had won, the New Orleans Saints would have received the top pick and first dibs on Bush, the Heisman Trophy-winning tailback from USC who's widely expected to enter the draft.
``You heard the talk all week: 'Play well, but don't win,''' said Texans quarterback David Carr, sidelined in the first half with a right elbow injury. ``All that stuff was a little distracting at times. Maybe a lot of fans were glad I busted my elbow and Andre (Johnson) got hurt. There were some wild things about this football game.
``If we couldn't win them all, if we couldn't make the playoffs, I guess having the first pick, as bad as it is, might be good.''
Both teams sometimes seemed determined to lose during a wacky afternoon that included a scoreless fourth quarter. Houston lost Carr (right elbow) and top receiver Johnson (left ankle) to injuries in the first half, then went scoreless for nearly 32 minutes to end the game.
Adams returned a third-quarter interception 40 yards for a tying touchdown for the 49ers (4-12), whose own No. 1 pick, Alex Smith, finally threw his first touchdown pass late in the first half.
``It is nice to win two weeks in a row,'' said Smith, who went 16-of-29 for 159 yards and hit Brandon Lloyd for a 14-yard score. ``It shows a lot about this team, going down both weeks, and we came back. We came together at the end of this season and we gained momentum.''
The Texans are in for big offseason changes, with Capers expected to be fired Monday after four seasons. Bush has been on fans' minds in Houston and San Francisco since November - but the 49ers, Bush's favorite team growing up, dropped out of the top five in the draft by doubling their win total from last season.
``I hope this is the last time we have the No. 1 pick,'' said Texans owner Bob McNair, who said he would address the team's coaching situation Monday. ``At the same time, it is of great value to us. ... We're going to have four picks in the first 70 players. That means we're going to get some good players.''
``It's a little premature right now to say who we're taking,'' said general manager Charley Casserly, who's expected to keep his job. ``But I think everybody knows we aren't taking Matt Leinart.''
Bush, who watched from Los Angeles while preparing for Wednesday's Rose Bowl against Texas, claims he still doesn't know whether he'll enter the draft.
``Whatever happens in this game, it won't have any effect on me,'' Bush said. ``Obviously it will just (affect) who gets the first pick in the NFL draft. ... Like I said from Day 1, I won't be worried about it until after the season.''
Both teams had ample chances to finish their seasons with a win. Houston's Kris Brown missed a 31-yard field goal with 6:07 left in regulation, slicing it right in a stiff wind, and the Niners then drove to the Houston 35 - where they decided to punt with 50 seconds left instead of trying a long field goal by the strong-legged Nedney.
``With the time on the clock and their timeouts, I thought that they had too much in their hands,'' 49ers coach Mike Nolan said.
After three overtime punts, backup Houston quarterback Tony Banks' long pass was intercepted near midfield by Adams, who lateraled to Emanuel for a rambling return. Two plays later, Nedney capped his stellar season with the winning kick.
``That's the pinnacle right there,'' Nedney said. ``A walk-off home run right there. That's what you dream about. It seems like it has been a long time since we have had one of those.''
The Niners - an NFL-worst 2-14 in 2004 - finished with a two-game improvement in Nolan's first season, though they also set a franchise record for the fewest offensive yards in a season.
After the Niners made consecutive 14-play drives resulting in 10 points, Banks hit Corey Bradford with a 25-yard touchdown pass to put Houston up 17-10 late in the third. Banks led another strong drive in the fourth, but Brown couldn't score from the exact distance of his missed field goal at the end of a 13-10 loss to Tennessee on Dec. 11.

Jaguars-Texans

The Jacksonville Jaguars remembered what the Houston Texans did to them last year. They were determined not to let it happen again.
Jacksonville clinched its first playoff berth since 1999 by scoring three fourth-quarter touchdowns in a 38-20 comeback victory over Houston on Saturday.
With it, the Jaguars erased the ugly memory of a 21-0 loss to Houston last year on Dec. 26 that dashed their playoff hopes.
The Jaguars trailed 13-10 at halftime and 20-17 in a game where the suddenly scrappy Texans refused to go away.
``We knew it wasn't going to be easy,'' said Jacksonville receiver Jimmy Smith. ``But we've become a second-half team this year. I don't necessarily like it that way - we don't like to have to come back. But we have matured enough to be poised and do whatever we have to do to come away with a win.''
Fred Taylor's 15-yard touchdown with just more than nine minutes remaining gave Jacksonville a 24-20 lead. Taylor shook off three defenders and carried another into the end zone.
Jacksonville (11-4) added two touchdowns late in the game on a 36-yard reception by Ernest Wilford and a 17-yard run by LaBrandon Toefield set up by an interception. That touchdown was Toefield's third score of the day.
It is the sixth game this season Jacksonville won after trailing at halftime.
The Jaguars let Houston (2-13) stick around until the final quarter, but in the end the Texans were foiled by several costly penalties, dropping three would-be interceptions and missing two second-half field goals. They also have the league's worst record after San Francisco beat St. Louis; the Texans play at the 49ers in the finale.
``We had our opportunities and were close on a few, but we didn't make the plays it takes to beat a good football team,'' said Texans coach Dom Capers.
Wilford's touchdown prompted about a dozen Texans fans to begin a spirited chant of ``Reg-gie Bush, Reg-gie Bush,'' in reference to the Heisman Trophy winner from Southern Cal, who'll likely be the first pick in the draft if he decides to leave school early.
``If another team was in the same situation we're in, the fans would be doing the same thing,'' said Texans receiver Andre Johnson. ``They come out and support us every week, but when you're down you have to do something to cheer yourself up.''
Houston led 13-10 at halftime on the strength of a 50-yard touchdown pass by Carr and two field goals, including a 53-yarder by Kris Brown. Brown missed a 38-yard field goal in the third quarter and one from 48 in the fourth.
Taylor was held to just 39 yards in the first half, but came on in the second, to finish with 101 yards and a score.
Garrard was hurried and harassed by the Houston defense all day, but still managed to throw for 292 yards. He fumbled twice, but both were recovered by Jacksonville. Twice he threw balls right into the hands of Houston defenders on the goal line, but they couldn't hold on.
``David played a really good game,'' said Jacksonville coach Jack Del Rio about Garrard, who is 2-2 since taking over for injured starter Byron Leftwich. ``He's done a good job while Byron's been down.''
But he still might lose his job if Leftwich returns this season. Del Rio said Leftwich ran and threw some passes late this week, but he's awaiting a doctor's report on his injured foot.
Garrard hopes he can retain his starting job even if Leftwich is healthy.
``It's up to them,'' Garrard said. ``But I'm not going to lie. I'd like it to be me.''
Toefield's second touchdown put Jacksonville ahead 17-13 in the third quarter, but Houston answered quickly. Houston's Andre Johnson got in front of Jaguars cornerback Terry Cousin on a 53-yard touchdown pass from Carr to take its final lead of the game.
Johnson had his second 100-yard game of the season with seven catches for 119 yards.
It's the first playoff berth for the Jaguars under Del Rio, who's in his third season.
``It was a big undertaking when we got here,'' said Del Rio, who got doused with Gatorade as time expired. ``Obviously they don't give a young coach a team chuck full of talent, ready for the Super Bowl. We had a lot of work to do when we got here and its starting to pay off.''

Cardinals-Texans

Texans 30, Cardinals 19
HOUSTON (AP) - The Houston Texans found a good way to quiet critics who accused them of tanking games to stay ahead in the race for the No. 1 draft pick.
After three straight heartbreaking losses, they finally held on to a lead to beat the Arizona Cardinals 30-19 on Sunday.
``We know we're not out there trying to throw games,'' Texans receiver Andre Johnson said. ``If we were really trying to lose, how did we win this one?''
They won it by jumping to a 24-10 halftime lead with a combined three touchdowns from backup running backs Jonathan Wells and Vernand Morency and by taking advantage of an injury-plagued and mistake-prone Arizona team.
And by winning, the Texans may have jeopardized their chances of landing Heisman Trophy winner Reggie Bush in the draft if he leaves Southern California.
``Reggie Bush is a tremendous athlete and I don't know if it's correct for me to say this or not, but I don't want him,'' Texans safety Jason Simmons said. ``If we get him it means we're the worst team in the league.''
Some fans didn't share his feelings. Late in the fourth quarter, a sad-looking young man held up a homemade sign reading ``Bye Bye Bush.''
Houston (2-12) is now tied with San Francisco for the worst record in the NFL after the 49ers lost to Jacksonville 10-9 on Sunday. The Texans face San Francisco in the season finale New Year's Day.
The Texans managed only a pair of field goals in the second half after taking a 24-10 halftime lead. The Cardinals played with third-string quarterback John Navarre for the entire second half after Kurt Warner injured his knee in the second quarter and backup Josh McCown didn't return after halftime because flulike symptoms.
``I think they clearly outplayed us,'' said Cardinals coach Dennis Green.
Arizona (4-10), which entered the game with 13 players on injured reserve, struggled in the third quarter before making a late run, adding a field goal and a touchdown in the fourth quarter to cut the lead to eight.
This time Houston finished the game, recovering an Arizona fumble and tacking on a field goal with less than a minute to go to put the game out of reach.
``This just shows there's no quit in us,'' said Texans receiver Jabar Gaffney. ``We came out and played it like we had a chance to go to the playoffs.''
The Texans were without running back Domanick Davis (swollen knee), but backups Wells and Morency filled in nicely, combining for 119 yards rushing.
Houston took advantage of a fumble by Arizona on a kickoff return and an interception in the second quarter to push a 14-10 lead to a 24-10 halftime advantage.
Navarre saw his second NFL action and the first since starting one game more than a year ago. He was more than a little rusty, but came on late to go 14-of-24 for 174 yards with a touchdown and an interception.
Warner was having a good day, going 10-of-10 for 115 yards and a touchdown, before injuring his knee. Green said Warner had a medial collateral ligament injury and will likely miss the rest of the season.
McCown replaced him in the second quarter and stayed one series, but it was long enough to throw an interception that led to a field goal by Houston.
Arizona led 10-7 in the second quarter after Warner threw a 20-yard touchdown pass to Anquan Boldin. Boldin had eight receptions for 134 yards to set a franchise record for consecutive 100-yard games with five.
Houston took a 17-7 lead when Morency wriggled away from two defenders before using a nifty spin move to coast 25 yards for his first career touchdown.
Neil Rackers kicked field goals of 26- and 42-yards for the Cardinals to tie an NFL record for field goals in a season by a team with 39.
Houston's league-worst rushing defense got a break against the poor running Cardinals and allowed a season-low 39-yards rushing. The unit also finished with six sacks, including four on Navarre.
The scoreboard in the $449 million Reliant Stadium wasn't working properly for most of the second half and players and coaches agreed that the technical problem was distracting..
Notes: WR Donovan Morgan, in his first game for the Texans, grabbed his first NFL reception on a 9-yard catch in the second quarter. ...Cardinals SS Adrian Wilson had five tackles to top 100 tackles for the second time in his career. ... Sunday was the first time since Houston's franchise opener in 2002 that the team had won with the roof of Reliant Stadium closed. ... Houston's three TDs rushing was a team record.

Texans-Titans

Titans 13, Texans 10
NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) - The Houston Texans aren't sure how many more ways they can find to lose games at the end. The Tennessee Titans know enough not to be picky.
Kris Brown hooked a 31-yard field goal short and wide left on an untimed play with no time left even as Tennessee coach Jeff Fisher was trying to call a timeout, and the Titans held on for a 13-10 victory Sunday over the hapless Texans.
Brown also had a 37-yard field goal attempt blocked by Tank Williams with 3:48 left.
Rob Bironas kicked a 21-yard field goal with 10 seconds left that gave Tennessee (4-9) the sweep of its AFC South rival, the Titans' third sweep in the four seasons since the Texans replaced them in Houston.
Tennessee tried to keep the ball out of Jerome Mathis' hands by squibbing the kickoff, but Todd Washington pitched it to the rookie returner. Mathis took off, and only Reynaldo Hill grabbing him by the face mask on the right sideline kept him from scoring. The penalty put the ball at the Tennessee 13 - except the kicker jerked the ball left.
Fisher was grateful the officials didn't see him asking for the timeout.
``I don't know if I have another way to describe that other than that was ugly,'' Fisher said.
The Texans (1-12) lost their sixth straight in yet another game they had plenty of chances to win, especially at the end. After blowing a 24-3 lead against St. Louis and a late lead last week against Baltimore, Houston had not one, but two chances in this game - the blocked kick and then the final one.
``In 20 years, I have never been through three weeks like we have been through here,'' Houston coach Dom Capers said.
Steve McNair set up Bironas' first career game-winning field goal by driving the Titans 70 yards in 10 plays with his second-longest run this season, an 18-yarder on third-and-4.
Brown said he had hoped Mathis would give him another chance after being low on his blocked kick, and he had been warming up on the sideline
``I didn't pull my end of the bargain today,'' Brown said.
Rookie Adam ``Pacman'' Jones also scored the first touchdown of his NFL career on a 52-yard punt return after rejoining the Titans late Saturday night following a funeral for a close friend and the death of an aunt.
The Titans also sacked David Carr six times, including two by Kyle Vanden Bosch for a career-high 12 1/2 sacks this season. They held the Texans to 234 yards offense, and Vanden Bosch called the ending crazy.
``I thought we won, then I thought they brought it back. Then I thought the game was over, then I thought we were going to overtime. Then we ended up winning. It was crazy,'' Vanden Bosch said.
The emotions were very different for the Texans.
``Why can't we just find a way to make one more play?'' Carr asked. ``It's offense, defense, special teams, myself included. We all have to find a way to make one more play, and we won't be in that situation.''
The Titans had to overcome their own ineptness in a sloppy game that featured a 21-yard punt by the Texans and a kickoff that would have gone out of bounds if not touched by Jarrett Payton at the Tennessee 15.
Tennessee turned the ball over on downs three times, missed a field goal wide right in the first quarter and had passes dropped in the end zone on two possessions.
The Titans were lucky all tickets for this game were sold in July because the stadium was half full on a cold, windy day.
Domanick Davis ran for 139 yards and caught seven passes for 50 more, and he gave the Texans a 10-3 lead with a 3-yard reception just before halftime.
Capers certainly tried to give his Texans every chance to win. He had Brown fake a field goal attempt in the fourth quarter on fourth-and-5, and the kicker ran for the first down only to see his field goal attempt blocked four plays later.
The Texans had been protecting Carr a little better since matching their season-high by allowing seven sacks to Tennessee on Oct. 9. Not this Sunday as the Titans sacked Carr once on each of the Texans' first three possessions.
The Titans couldn't take advantage with two receivers and a tight end missing the game with injuries, bogging down every time they got near the end zone. They finally scored on a Bironas field goal with 4:28 left in the second.
Notes: McNair finally passed John Elway for fourth among NFL quarterbacks in yards rushing with his 18-yard run. ... Jones' return for a TD was the Titans' first since Justin McCareins returned a punt 58 yards for a touchdown at Atlanta on Nov. 23, 2003. ... Titans running back Travis Henry had a 42-yard reception in the second quarter that was his career-long. ... Brown, who was a perfect 5-of-5 for field goals last week, was 1-of-3 against the Titans.

Texans-Ravens
Ravens 16, Texans 15
BALTIMORE (AP) - Kyle Boller walked onto the field with 64 seconds left, no timeouts and his Baltimore Ravens down by two points.
Starting at his own 13 yard-line, the oft-criticized quarterback faced the prospect of moving the ball behind a makeshift offensive line.
Fortunately, he was operating against the Houston Texans.
Boller came through, and Matt Stover kicked a 38-yard field goal with 6 seconds remaining to give Baltimore a 16-15 victory Sunday.
A game filled with blunders, fumbles and penalties ended in familiar fashion for the Texans, who let a seemingly certain win get away for the second straight week.
``We've got to be able to make plays at the end of the game and bring it home,'' Houston linebacker Shantee Orr said. ``That's what we haven't been able to do the last two weeks.''
A week ago, the Texans (1-11) blew a 10-point lead in the closing minutes against St. Louis and lost in overtime. This time, Houston allowed Boller to move the Ravens 67 yards in eight plays before Stover delivered.
``It excites me as a veteran here to see that we didn't give up and we did enough to win the game,'' said the 37-year-old Stover, who has kicked 11 game-winners over a 15-year career.
Kris Brown's fifth field goal with 1:08 left put Houston in position for its second win of the season. But the Texans couldn't hold on.
Boller completed a 24-yard pass to Todd Heap on third down, then hit rookie Mark Clayton with an 11-yarder. Two plays later, a 35-yard completion to Clayton got the Ravens (4-8) into field-goal position.
``You've got to make something happen,'' Boller said. ``All you can hope for is to execute the way we did. Guys just made plays, and that's what it's all about.''
Boller went 17-for-33 for 198 yards and ran for a second-quarter score.
After Baltimore's Adalius Thomas returned an interception 20 yards for a touchdown with 7:16 to go, the Texans trailed 13-9. But Houston got a field goal with 3:31 remaining, then took advantage of poor clock management to get the ball back.
A fair catch by B.J. Sams on the kickoff and two subsequent timeouts preceded a Ravens punt. Domanick Davis returned the kick 21 yards to the Baltimore 29, and Brown followed with a 39-yard field goal.
It wasn't enough.
``I'm on the sidelines at that point, watching it,'' Houston quarterback David Carr said. ``To have that happen two weeks in a row, especially in the situation we're already in, it makes it harder.''
Houston fumbled five times, was intercepted once and received 11 penalties for 93 yards. Yet the Texans stayed close because the Ravens fumbled four times, were penalized eight times and could muster only 73 yards rushing.
Baltimore sacked Carr five times, including a career-high three by Terrell Suggs.
Davis ran for 155 yards on 29 carries, but the Texans failed to score a touchdown for the first time in 31 games dating back to December 2003.
``We've still got to find a way to hit some big plays. We were able to hit a couple, but not enough,'' Carr said.
In the third quarter, Sams had an 89-yard punt return for a touchdown nullified after the Ravens were called for two penalties on the play.
That set off a series of miscues by both teams. After Boller recovered his own fumble at the Baltimore 1, Houston's Jerome Mathis fumbled away a punt at the Baltimore 36. Chester Taylor gave it back, losing the ball on the 29.
Andre Johnson then dropped a likely touchdown pass, and the Texans settled for a 22-yard field goal by Brown for a 9-7 lead with 14:30 left.
``I kind of misjudged it and it hit me on the shoulder pad,'' Johnson said. ``I feel real bad about that happening.''
The Ravens played a sixth straight game without linebacker Ray Lewis, and cornerback Chris McAlister was held out with a strained hamstring.
Boller played behind an offensive line that was without injured starters Keydrick Vincent (hamstring), Orlando Brown (back) and Pro Bowl left tackle Jonathan Ogden, who strained a hamstring in the first quarter and did not return.
Baltimore did, however, regain the services of safety Ed Reed, who was back in the starting lineup after missing six weeks with a sprained ankle.
A fumble by Jamal Lewis ended Baltimore's first series on its 36, but the Texans lost 15 yards in three plays and had to punt.
That rest of the game sputtered along in similar fashion.
Notes: Clayton had a season-high seven catches. ... The Texans scored their first first-quarter points on the road. ... It was the third game in which Baltimore did not allow a TD.
